University of Basel Kings’ Valley Project

Switzerland

The University of Basel Kings’ Valley Project is one of the few foreign research teams to receive permission from the Egyptian authorities to investigate all non-royal tombs in a central area in the Valley of the Kings. The concession allows extensive research into a total of 12 grave sites and their immediate surroundings.

Only a small part of the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, which belong to the world cultural heritage, are scientifically documented and published. In addition, entire areas of the valley are still practically unexplored, which is worrying given the acute threat posed by human and natural influences. It is therefore our concern to secure the valuable information contained in these grave sites for the future, the general public and for research.

The University of Basel Kings’ Valley Project is particularly dedicated to the documentation and preservation of these endangered monuments, and attaches great importance to site management, i.e. the sustainable protection of the monuments in their surroundings.
