IMPORTANT changes to the IAE
Dear Members,
Early in 2026 it became clear that the IAE, founded in June 1947, has existed for almost 80 years without a formal legal status. This appeared to be problematic with changing banking rules, which nowadays require that organizations can only have an account when they are officially established and recognized non-profit entities. The current Council and Presidium have, therefore, researched the requirements and taken the steps to put the IAE on a firm legal footing. The legal entity of the IAE is registered in Germany as the International Association of Egyptologists e.V. (eingetragener Verein, registered association).
What changes?
The statutes had to be adapted to the current legal standards. The IAE e.V. has, therefore, new statutes and in addition a number of rules & regulations, that organize aspects of the old statutes of the IAE that are likely to need adapting at some point (such as the fees, or the ethical standards). There will be two membership categories: full members and student members (instead of full/associate/student members).
The fees will increase slightly by 1 January 2027 to € 30 per year, with fee-reductions for students and colleagues from particular countries (listed in the rules & regulations).
The dissolution of the longstanding IAE will be voted on by its membership before December 31, 2026
From January 1, 2027 the website will be the official website of the newly structured organization.
What does not change?
The aims of the IAE remain the same, including the support of both the International Congress of Egyptologists (ICE) and the Online Egyptological Bibliography (OEB).
The new statutes and rules & regulations are based on the existing statutes.
Painless Transition
Everybody who is a member of the IAE on 31 October 2026 will be asked to indicate to automatically migrate to the IAE e.V. between 1 November and 15 December. Further details and information on how to migrate will follow soon.
